SEK 3.5 Billion Contract for Saab to Improve Sweden's Fighter Aircraft Capability

Saab has received an order to provide continued operability and capability enhancements to Sweden’s JAS 39 Gripen C/D fighter aircraft. The contract, which was signed with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), is valued at approximately SEK 3.5 billion and will run from 2023 to 2029. It includes options for FMV to place additional orders for capability enhancements in 2023.

The enhancements will include the installation of a new version of the aircraft’s engine, which will improve flight performance. The aircraft will also receive an upgraded electronic warfare system and a new radar that provides enhanced fighter capability and extended detection and tracking range.

The avionics system will also be upgraded to allow for fast software updates of the sensor function. These improvements will increase the aircraft’s attack capability and create better interoperability between the Gripen C/D and Gripen E platforms.

Jonas Hjelm, Head of Saab’s Aeronautics business area, said the contract “is a big leap ahead in terms of radar performance and functionality, both for the hardware and software, and will future-proof the operational capability of Gripen C/D.”

He added that the enhancements will provide the Swedish Air Force with a significantly stronger fighter capability.
